The Care Certificate is a set of standards that specify the knowledge and skills required for individuals working in health and social care roles in the UK.

  1. Understand your role: This standard focuses on understanding the job role and responsibilities, including the importance of working within the limits of your competence and seeking support when needed.

  2. Your personal development: This standard emphasizes the importance of continuous personal and professional development. It encourages individuals to actively seek learning opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge.

  3. Duty of care: This standard emphasizes the legal and ethical responsibilities of care workers to ensure the safety, well-being, and welfare of the individuals they support.

  4. Equality and diversity: This standard highlights the importance of treating all individuals with respect and dignity, regardless of their background, culture, beliefs, or preferences. It promotes inclusivity and challenges discrimination.

  5. Work in a person-centred way: This standard focuses on the significance of providing care and support that is tailored to the individual's needs, preferences, and choices. It promotes person-centered care and involves individuals in decision-making processes.

  6. Communication: This standard emphasizes effective communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal, to ensure clear and accurate exchange of information with individuals, their families, and other healthcare professionals.

  7. Privacy and dignity: This standard highlights the importance of respecting individuals' privacy, promoting dignity, and maintaining confidentiality while providing care and support.

  8. Fluids and nutrition: This standard covers the understanding of the importance of proper hydration, nutrition, and food safety in maintaining the health and well-being of individuals.

  9. Awareness of mental health, dementia, and learning disabilities: This standard focuses on developing an understanding of common mental health conditions, dementia, and learning disabilities. It promotes empathy, person-centered support, and appropriate signposting for further assistance.

  10. Safeguarding adults: This standard addresses the identification and response to safeguarding concerns regarding vulnerable adults, including recognizing signs of abuse, knowing how to report concerns, and supporting individuals to keep them safe.

  11. Safeguarding children: This standard covers the identification and response to safeguarding concerns regarding children, including recognizing signs of abuse, knowing how to report concerns, and promoting the welfare of children.

  12. Basic life support: This standard provides knowledge and skills related to basic life support techniques, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and responding to choking incidents.

  13. Health and safety: This standard focuses on promoting a safe and healthy working environment, including understanding and following health and safety policies and procedures, risk assessment, and infection prevention.

  14. Handling information: This standard covers the handling and storage of confidential and sensitive information, ensuring its accuracy, and adhering to data protection regulations.

  15. Infection prevention and control: This standard emphasizes the importance of preventing the spread of infections through good hygiene practices, such as hand hygiene, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and proper waste management.

These standards collectively form the Care Certificate and provide a foundation of knowledge and skills for individuals working in health and social care roles. By completing the training and meeting these standards, care workers demonstrate their competence and commitment to providing quality care and support.
